Today, hip­popota­mus Tanja of Ams­ter­dam Zoo was put to sleep to avoid any fur­ther suf­fer­ing from her very seri­ous skin dis­ease. Born in cap­tiv­ity in 1960 at Ams­ter­dam Zoo she was an exam­ple of mod­ern zoo ani­mal hus­bandry and man­age­ment. She became a friend of many cit­i­zens of the Dutch cap­i­tal.
