The earthquake, tsunami of 11 March, and their aftermath has not only affected the human population of the North of Japan, but also had a devastating effect on the zoos and aquariums. The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) is trying to provide financial support for emergency assistance to help the zoos and aquariums in the North of Japan. WAZA is joining forces with its Japanese regional association (JAZA) to provide help where it is urgently needed.
Huge damages happened in the northern part of Honshu island. Some affected zoos and aquariums are suffering from shortage of gas, fuel for heater, food and drinking water for both humans and animals. And there is the Fukushima nuclear power plant problem, of course.
To help organising the cooperation and support WAZA is collecting donations through its website. Click on the “Donate for Japan” button on the WAZA homepage and help them support JAZA. For more information, see the WAZA website.
