The research is expected to help guide future con­ser­va­tion efforts for polar bears, which are listed as threat­ened under the Endan­gered Species Act. Cli­mate change has forced polar and brown bears to share habi­tats. Occa­sion­ally, the two species inter­breed and pro­duce hybrid bears.
