In late 2010, Fauna & Flora International’s Cambodian Elephant Conservation Group began camera trapping on Da Lai peak in the Cardamom Mountains. Their aim was to learn more about the elephant population that lives there, and find out whether they were breeding.
The footage they captured showed not only that the elephants were breeding, but also tracked one female as she progressed through her two-year pregnancy and revealed some fascinating behaviour.
Best of all, just before the survey came to a close, the team was rewarded with a glimpse of the female and her young calf:
The Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) is considered an Endangered species according the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™.
